Newbury Labour is now the fastest growing political force in West Berkshire.
In January, before the General Election campaign kicked into gear, membership stood at 131 members. Since then it has near trebled to 354 and that figure continues to rise weekly.
Membership grew steadily during the campaign as particularly young people locally got involved in Jonny Roberts’ campaign but the biggest rises came after the election result was announced, during the leadership contest and then after the election of Jeremy Corbyn.
A further 98 local trade unionists have voluntarily affiliated themselves to the party and over 100 people paid £3 to become ‘registered supporters’ and vote in the leadership contest. These groups are now being approached to convert to full membership and we’re keen for Labour supporters across Newbury and West Berks to join us as we seek to establish ourselves as the true opposition to the Conservatives locally and challenge for council seats in 2019.
