These cuts are bad news for the Individuals that rely on these services, but also their families which are torn apart by drug and Alcohol abuse“ Michael Wakelyn-Green Labour Candidate for Newbury Greenham
Michael currently works in Newbury, and has lived in West Berkshire his whole life. He went to Kennet School, and has since graduated University with a BSc Criminology and Sociology degree. He has a keen interest in Drug Law reform, and reshaping the law to better reflect scientific evidence, rather than punitive ideology. For every £1 spent on drug-related treatments, it saves £2.50 in Policing, NHS and Crime costs (Home Office, 2017).
Michael condemns Council cuts to Drug and Alcohol Harm reduction services, in West Berkshire, like Swanswell in Central Newbury.
He says “These cuts are bad news for the Individuals that rely on these services, but also their families which are torn apart by drug and Alcohol abuse. Evidence shows that these services ultimately save more tax payers money in the long run – Prevention is far better than cure. It’s ridiculous that the “Financially responsible” Conservatives have cut these services. It just shows their short-sighted thinking when it comes to these kinds of issues, but also that cuts are ideologically driven, rather than supported by the scientific evidence. If you genuinely cared about tax payer’s money and excessive spending, you wouldn’t be cutting back on these services as they SAVE MONEY! These cuts are bad for people, and financially irresponsible.
